Princess Charlotte's Birthday as Royal Turns Six, New Picture Released
Princess Charlotte celebrates her sixth birthday with a new picture today—just more than a week after younger brother Prince Louis turned three.
Prince William and Kate Middleton will celebrate with their daughter after a year marked by COVID lockdowns and home learning.
A Kensington Palace spokesperson said yesterday: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to share a new photograph of Princess Charlotte ahead of her sixth birthday tomorrow.
“The photograph was taken by The Duchess this weekend in Norfolk.”
The Duchess of Cambridge often shares her own pictures of her children for their birthdays and last year images were circulated of Charlotte helping deliver food parcels.
Spider Sandwiches and Home schooling
Kate gave an insight into life under lockdown for her children in May last year when promoting her Hold Still photography project on ITV.
She told hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: “We try to check in daily with family members and speak to them about news so in some ways we’ve got a lot more contact than before.
“But it’s hard to explain to a five- and six-year-old what’s going on, but the school’s been great in supporting them as well.
“It’s extraordinary. I’m sure you’re experiencing the same yourselves and your families and things.
“We’re stuck into home schooling again. They’re unprecedented times really. But, no, we’re fine, thank you for asking.”
She added: “George gets very upset because he just wants to do all of Charlotte’s projects. Spider sandwiches are far cooler than literacy work.”
A First Outing on the Red Carpet
However, it was not all being kept cooped up indoors as Charlotte made her first appearance on the red carpet.
The Cambridge children got a chance to go to the theatre for a special pantomime performance to thank key workers fighting the coronavirus pandemic, on December 11.
Charlotte joined her parents and siblings Prince George and Prince Louis at London’s Palladium Theatre for the event, hosted by The National Lottery.
They were photographed as a family heading into the venue, where they saw actors dressed as Elves performing.
Rhiannon Mills, Sky News royal correspondent, wrote at the time: “Their first red carpet, a rite of passage for any royal child.
“Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were all on best behaviour.
“Prince Louis snuggled into mum Kate, when she tried to introduce him to an elf, and while Prince George is growing up fast, Princess Charlotte again seemed the most confident, at one point rejecting Prince William’s hand, happy to walk by herself without any support from dad.”
A Christmas Light Show
Charlotte and her siblings also went to a Christmas light show near the family’s Anmer Hall country retreat, in Norfolk.
The Cambridge family were photographed walking around Luminate, at Sandringham, with Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and their two children.
While the older royals were criticised at the time for flouting COVID rules restricting outdoor gatherings to six people, the children’s enjoyment of the festivities will likely have been unaffected.
Prince Louis’ Birthday
Charlotte’s own celebrations come on the back of Prince Louis’ birthday last week, when he turned three.
A new picture was released, taken by Kate the morning he left for his first day of nursery, showing Louis on his balance bike in school uniform, complete with rucksack.
A Kensington Palace statement said: “The photograph was taken at Kensington Palace on Wednesday by The Duchess, shortly before Prince Louis left for his first day of nursery at the Willcocks Nursery School.”
