Naomi Osaka Withdraws From the French Open With a Powerful Statement

< img src=" https://fabfourum.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/2Y1gr1.jpg" class=" ff-og-image-inserted"/ > Over the past couple of days, the French Open has been eclipsed by a heated dispute around the obligations of its gamers to engage with the media. On Wednesday, following Naomi Osaka’s triumph over the Romanian player Patricia Maria Tig, the Japanese-American champ and current world second finished her courtside post-match interview, but chose not to participate in the post-match press conference. This result in a $15,000 fine, and a powerful rebuke from the league of Grand Slam competitions that comprise the most renowned– and eventually highest-paying– bodies within the world of tennis.

While numerous questioned the reasoning behind this choice at the time, today Osaka announced her withdrawal from this year’s French Open completely. “I believe the finest thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everybody can get back to concentrating on the tennis going on in Paris,” Osaka composed in a statement published to Twitter.

The choice, as Osaka discussed in her post, was a measure to take care of her psychological health. “The reality is I have actually suffered long bouts of depression considering that the United States Open in 2018 and I have had an actually tough time dealing with that,” Osaka composed. “Though the tennis press has always been kind to me (and I wish to say sorry to all the cool reporters who I may have injured), I am not a natural public speaker and get big waves of anxiety prior to I speak with the world’s media. I get really worried and find it stressful to always attempt to engage and provide you the very best responses I can.”

Osaka’s declaration drew in praise from much of her peers and spotlighted a hypocrisy that exists within many corners of the sporting world. While gamers with physical injuries are always assigned the needed time to recuperate, the preconception surrounding psychological health suggests that lots of remain silent about their suffering. For a professional athlete of Osaka’s stature to speak out about the impact of mental health on conducting a profession as an expert athlete– and provided with a maturity and insight far beyond her years– is more powerful than it might at first seem.

” I’m going to take some time far from the court now, but when the time is best I actually wish to work with the Trip to talk about ways we can make things better for the gamers, press, and fans,” Osaka concluded. And if Osaka’s previous work as an activist, from honoring Black victims of police cruelty to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and equivalent pay for women in sport is anything to go by, you can be sure she’ll be back next season with a service– and shooting directly back to the top of the leaderboard once again.
