Elton John Says What We’re All Thinking: “The Oscar Ceremony Looks Like It’s Coming From A Starbucks”

Elton John Says What We’re All Thinking: “The Oscar Ceremony Looks Like It’s Coming From A Starbucks”

In the days since the chaotic 93rd Academy Awards, even more unusual post-show behavior has ensued. There was surprise best actor winner Anthony Hopkins delivering an Instagram acceptance speech from the English countryside. Then Marcus Mumford revealed that he and his Oscar-nominated spouse, Carey Mulligan, casually kept one of the Oscar-adorned lampshades that lined tables at Los Angeles’ Union Station. And, of course, the world has scrambled to deconstruct Glenn Close’s rendition of “Da Butt.” Now, Elton John has added his voice to the bizarre Oscars aftermath.

In the midst of hosting his annual Elton John AIDS Foundation viewing party, the Grammy winner remarked on the changes to this year’s ceremony. “It’s a pain,” he told Neil Patrick Harris during a commercial break, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He then elaborated on the virtual nature of his party, adding, “It’s not a pain. I wish we could be there. It’s more fun to be there. This is the only way we could do it.” Then, John made his most arresting comment of the evening: “The Oscar ceremony looks like it’s coming from a Starbucks somewhere.”

John’s evaluation of the sun-soaked set-up, conceived by architect David Rockwell as a nod to Old Hollywood supper clubs, was a conviction he held throughout the show. After celebrating Daniel Kaluuya’s win for best supporting actor, John said, “I still can’t get over the set, though.” Influenced by the first 1929 Oscars ceremony, Rockwell’s design was meant to make “a statement about craving shared experience,” which feels like the opposite ethos of a crowded Starbucks— where patrons go to avoid human contact while sipping foam and staring at their laptops.

However, the cafe-style tables and the stilted energy, not to mention Frances McDormand’s caffeinated howl, arguably did evoke the coffee house chain. Despite John’s issues with the Oscars, he still managed to book Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga, Cynthia Erivo, and the cast of It’s a Sin at his virtual event. And maybe an off-kilter Oscars ceremony was just what the world needed right now?
