Anna Tivel shares new song ‘Astrovan’

In July last year, Anna Tivel delivered Blue World, a collaboration with Portland musician friends Galen Clark and Micah Hummel, on which Mike Davies concludes in his review: “Designed as a project to capture and reflect that sense of isolation and stillness brought about by the pandemic, but also to invest it with a sense of humanity, connection and hope, Tivel has crafted far more than simply some reimagined versions of her songs; this is a world with its own beauty and captivating intimacy.”

Today, it was announced that she has signed to hometown label Mama Bird Recording Co. and to mark the occasion she has shared a live rendition of a new song called “Astrovan”. The video is the first of the label’s new series, The Schoolhouse Sessions, shot at their new headquarters outside Portland.

Of joining the Mama Bird family, Tivel offers, “Vincent and Eric over at Mama Bird are real-deal music lovers and vision cultivators and I’m thrilled and honored to be joining the family. I’ve worn out the records of their artists for years and have been so inspired by the way they champion both words and heart. The way I see it, you’ve won the musician lottery every time you get to work with people you’d also love to go camping with.”

Mama Bird’s Vincent Bancheri adds, “I’ve been a fan of Anna’s since I first saw her play a cozy house show some 10(ish) years ago. Anna’s albums feel like an old paperback book of short stories that you keep in your back pocket so you can read them over and over. There’s such feeling, thoughtfulness, and character depth all weaved through seemingly effortless melodies that stick to your gut. She’s a wonderful human whose values align completely with all that Mama Bird aims for; and she’s our kind of weirdo, to boot.”

In celebration of joining Mama Bird, Tivel will embark on extensive tours this spring and summer that include dates with Hayes Carll, Jeffrey Martin, and new labelmate Matt Dorrien. Festival appearances include the Greenbelt Festival in London.
